A very nice French Barbizon oil on canvas painting from the 19th century depicting cattle in a forest. The picture was taken around 1840.
It was previously in a French private collection.
French painter Théodore Rousseau, a great narrative artist of landscape painting, one of the founders of the Barbizon school, where László Paál also lived and worked. Most of his pictures are kept in the Louvre and the Mesdag Museum in The Hague.
Rousseau's attention was very captivated by the observation of the structure of nature, the granite blocks, the branches of large trees, the interior of the forest, the clearings within it, the trees with huge crowns at the edge of the forest with their leaves and the wide horizon landscape, swamps or watering holes. He made his sketches outdoors. His images are often dominated by the powerful color scale of the midday sun or the lights of the sunset or the mood after the rain. He is the epic of the landscape in contrast to the approach of Jean-François Millet, who also liked to depict the people belonging to the landscape. The center of Rousseau's pictures is the landscape. He depicted nature by itself and for itself, in the noblest sense of the word, mainly with the tools of naturalism, but already after leaving the studio, so his art was a source for his contemporaries, and later also for realist and impressionist painters.
His works fetch high prices at major auctions. His works like this occasionally change hands for millions of forints when they appear!
