Béla Kondor (1931-1972): Festive march. Etching, paper, unmarked, in mounted, glazed frame. Print size: 11×8 cm.

Béla Kondor was a painter, graphic artist, poet. He was born in Pestszentlőrinc and went to school here. In 1951, he joined the Budapest College of Fine Arts from the fine arts department of the Ganz shipyard. He studied painting, but was advised against it in his third year.

He obtained a diploma in graphic design in 1956, but already exhibited his works from 1954. He went to Paris with a Derkovits scholarship. He lived by illustrating books. It was only in the 1960s that his art began to be appreciated: he won numerous domestic and international graphics awards. He published a graphic album in 1970, but his collected poems were not published until after his death. He received the Münkacsy award twice. After his death, in 1990, his life work was evaluated with the most prestigious Hungarian award, the Kossuth Award. His drawings, paintings, and photos are kept by museums and private collectors.
