Varsányi pál: Gulliver "in the capital", 1936. Linocut, paper 45 x 32 cm marked on the print lower left v.P.; Indicated in the center below v.
In 1919, Pál Varsányi (1902-1990) was a student of Béla Uitz at the Proletarian Fine Arts Workshop, and then continued his training under the guidance of Adolf Luňskás and István Zádor. In the 1930s, he worked as a member of the group of socialist visual artists. He was well versed in all genres of duplicating graphics. The best known are his woodcuts with black lines on a white background and white lines on a black background, which testify to his social sensitivity. He created illustrations for the works of Sándor Petőfi, Ady Endre and Attila József, and he was the illustrator of Lajos Kássák's book Angelland. His graphics have appeared in Swedish, Dutch, Swiss and Belgian newspapers.
The Gulliver "in the capital" series is part of the collection of the Janus Pannonius Museum in Pécs.
