Gyula Rudnay (Pelsőc, January 9, 1878 – Budapest, January 4, 1957) Hungarian painter, graphic artist, industrial artist, college teacher, awarded with the Corvin chain, winner of the Kossuth Prize; the founder and leader of the artist colony in Baja.
He began his studies at the School of Applied Arts in Budapest in 1893 and continued his studies in Munich at the Simon Hollósy Free School. In the summer, he went to a large mine and trained in Rome and Paris. After returning home, in 1905, he went to hódmezővásárhely, where he became close friends with János Tornyai. During the First World War, he painted in and around Losonc, depicting the lives of those fleeing the horrors of war and the drama of the escape. From 1922, he taught at the College of Fine Arts for thirty years. In 1947, he organized an artist colony and painting school in Bajan.
"He is one of the greatest masters of Hungarian landscape painting. In his paintings, the Hungarian landscape appears with all its characteristics and all its beauty. His subjects: the edge of the forest, the hillside, the farmyard, the end of the village, rows of village houses. The horizon is often low, the sky high. At once a quiet melancholy pours, at other times a dramatic storm roars over his landscapes. Correspondingly, his presentation is sometimes velvety, at other times powerful. He presents an amazingly beautiful and rich series of green colors in his landscapes. He always paints a real landscape, but imbues it with the magic of his imagination. His landscape painting is the knee-jerk reaction of a pure-hearted Hungarian artist before the beauty of his country."
/Fine Arts Magazine, 1942, iii. Grade, Number 8/
