Description: Pablo Picasso ( 1881 - 1973 ). This unique pebble -shaped medal was struck in 1981 to celebrate the birth centenary of the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. The medal was designed by Joan Miro. Still another Spanish artist, Joan Gardy Artigas, made the model from which the medal was struck. UNESCO awards this medal to individuals or groups in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the arts or culture.
They were made in gold plated silver, silver and bronze.
This is the gold one.
The obverse of the medal bears the inscription Pablo Picasso – Málaga – 25.X.1881 and has “in the center an eye, fixed and alert, surrounded by magical and musical inscriptions, like Picasso's eye…”, according to the description that Miró himself did. On the reverse is a landscape with a desert field, a tree, a star on the horizon and Miró's signature.
