A német kostruktív, konkrét képzőművészet egyik legfontosabb tagja.
1970-ben kinevezték a Berlini Képzőművészeti Főiskola vizuális kommunikációjának professzorának, 1974-ben a Főiskola igazgatóhelyettese, és több évig oktatói vezetője volt 1990-ben nyugdíjba vonulásáig .
1993-ban Herbert W. Kapitzki a VDGD német grafikai tervező egyesület alapítója volt Stuttgartban, és egy évvel később, 1994-ben is a " Design for Forum " alapítója .
