The painting depicts a mine's misfortune, with a damaged miner crouching in the face of a frightened woman. (At that time, both women and children were working in the mine, especially as coal-picked day laborers.) Above them, a man tries to hold on to the beam that is about to fall, perhaps with his last strength.
