Gontcharova’s works of art are known in the West, and this painting fits into the Rayonist era.

Goncharova is above all a painter, but her work is very diverse in terms of genre: decorations and costume designs, portraits, posters and book illustrations. Together with her husband, Mikhail Fyodorovich Larionov, she became the initiator of a new generation of Russian artists. His mature works combine the values of Russian folk art, the turn of the century and the art trends of the 1910s and 20s in an original way.

Goncharova was born in 1881 as a child of an impoverished landowner family. The goncharovs were architects of the tsarist court for several generations. He graduated from a vocational school in Moscow, where he was a pupil of the Impressionist sculptor Trubeckoj and then continued his studies as a painter. It was the recognition of the possibilities of color and the love of nature that attracted him to painting. His early works follow the stylizing impressionism of Borisov-Musatov, but many young Russian artists still drew from it.

His works from 1906 have a sophisticated color scheme, floating lightness, cheerful atmosphere and sparkling humor. He often depicts scenes, life images, landscapes and still lifes of rural landowner-noble life. The naive freshness of modeling is an interesting contrast to the refined, rich color scheme.

His role model was paul cézanne, vincent van gogh and paul gauguin alongside the nabis and fauves group.

He died on October 12, 1962 in Paris. He combined the values of his country’s national art in an individual way with the European aspirations of the age. In addition to the dynamic, explosive larionov, he represented a more lyrical, contemplative figure. He actively interacted with his environment, reacting sensitively to both human and artistic problems.

According to the seal on the back of the painting, which was also a proof of origin, it was once part of a collection.

Goncharova’s works are extremely precious pieces worldwide and are popular pieces at auctions. His works can be found in the largest museums in the world.
